Saltwater vs Chlorine Pool
You mention to your friend that you want to install a pool in your backyard, but that you aren’t excited for the lingering smell of chlorine and the resulting dry, itchy skin. Your friend says, “Why don’t you get a saltwater pool then?” Say what? Cue your google search. Now that you’re here, welcome! And read on for a quick explanation.
How a traditional chlorine pool works: You add chlorine to the water manually (as a tablet, stick, or liquid).
How a saltwater pool works: Rather than adding chlorine by hand, a saltwater generator uses a process known as electrolysis to convert salt into chlorine.

Why would I want a chlorine pool
It’s cheaper to install and easier to maintain. It uses less electricity. You can often solve problems on your own, rather than needing to call in a professional (which tends to be the case with saltwater pools). And this traditional method does not cause damage to pool features (that saltwater can).
Why would I want a saltwater pool
The biggest reason this is preferred by many is its low concentration of chlorine, which is much easier on your skin, hair, and eyes. Rather than being dry and itchy, your skin is left feeling soft. This is especially meaningful if you plan to swim often. As a side benefit, swimsuits don’t fade either.
While saltwater pools are more expensive to install, they are less expensive to maintain. With a chlorine pool, you must maintain it manually and frequently. But with a saltwater pool, the generator maintains the chlorine levels for you, which means you can go much longer between maintenance checks.

So which should I choose
If you’re looking at cost alone, would you rather spend less money up front and more for maintenance later on or more money up front and less for maintenance? Of course, there are several additional factors. We’d love to chat with you and answer your specific questions. If you live in or near New Braunfels, give us a call and we’ll gladly help!
